Two people have been taken to hospital after a fire started inside a duplex in Winnipeg's North End on Wednesday evening.

Firefighters were called to the 500 block of Redwood Avenue shortly at about 8:15 p.m. on reports of fire at what was initially described as an apartment block.

Fire officials told CBC News the fire started inside the building.

Most of the people inside the duplex got out on their own, but firefighters helped one person out of the building, officials said.

The fire caused $100,000 in damages to the structure and $35,000 in damages to contents.

The two people who were taken to hospital were said to be in stable condition.

Police closed Redwood Avenue between Powers and McGregor streets in both directions shortly before 9 p.m. They didn't say when it would re-open.
