Manitoba's oldest person has died.

Sam Baker, who had turned 109 in December, died on Monday.

His parents came to Winnipeg from Poland in 1905, hoping for a better life. Baker spent most of his life as a businessman, owning clothing stores in Brandon and Yorkton, Sask.

In December 2012, days before his 109th birthday, Baker spoke with CBC News about his age and knowing when it was time to turn in his driver's license.

"About two years ago and I said, 'that's enough.' I'm going to quit before I'm told to quit," he said.

Baker attributed his longevity to walking a lot.

The funeral service is scheduled to take place at Shaarey Zedek Synagogue, 561 Wellington Cres. on Aug. 8 at 1:30 pm.
