Manitobans getting ready for winter can now apply for low-interest financing toward the purchase of winter tires, the provincial government announced on Monday.

The financing program is being administered by Manitoba Public Insurance and will provide loans up to 48 months in length at prime rate plus two per cent for up to $2,000 per vehicle.

"We want Manitobans to be as safe as possible on the roads. This financing program provides another option to buy winter tires for people who otherwise may not make this road safety purchase," Andrew Swan, who is the minister responsible for MPI, stated in a news release.

"Snow tires help you stop more quickly and reduce sliding on ice and snow, reducing the risk on the road during Manitoba's challenging winter conditions."

Applicants must be MPI customers who are not subject to financing restrictions.

They must go to participating retailers to buy qualifying winter tires, which are designed to be used in severe snow conditions, for a registered passenger vehicle or light truck.

Potential applicants can go to MPI's website to determine if they qualify for financing and locate their nearest participating retailer.
