Winnipeg police have made an arrest in the city's first homicide of this year.

Justin Atelard Catcheway, 30, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder in the death of Justin Desmarais, 24, who was found dead inside an Andrews Street rooming house on Jan. 19.

Desmarais died of blunt-force trauma to the upper body, Sgt. Natalie Aitken said Monday.

Investigators believe the two men got into a fight inside the rooming house on Jan. 18.

A Canada-wide warrant was issued for Catcheway's arrest and police asked the public for their help in late January, but Aitken said that did not help.

"I can tell you that we didn't receive any tips with respect to that investigation, and it was just the continued work of the homicide unit with other members of our service that were able to locate him," she said.

Officers arrested Catcheway without incident inside a suite in the 400 block of Kennedy Street on Friday.
