If NHL returns, party at The Forks: mayor

Winnipeg Mayor Sam Katz say if an NHL return is officially announced people should celebrate at The Forks.

Winnipeg Mayor Sam Katz says if an NHL return is officially announced people should celebrate at The Forks.

The Forks has been preparing for an impromptu gathering of hockey fans, and Katz said he doesn't plan to close down Portage and Main.

Katz said the city will get a few hours notice so they can be ready.

"We'll be doing everything we can, trying to prepare in advance, not knowing exactly when it's going to happen," he said.

"And it could have an impact whether it's early morning, late afternoon, mid-afternoon, etcetera, etcetera."

As of Thursday, the Atlanta Thrashers' owners and Winnipeg's True North Sports and Entertainment were still working through complex legal details on the sale and relocation of the team.
