Two people climbed out a second-storey window during an early morning house fire in Winnipeg on Tuesday.

Fire officials said the call came in just before 2 a.m. for a house in the 400 block of Lansdowne Avenue, just off Powers Street, in the city's St. John's neighbourhood.

When police officers arrived they saw the house engulfed in flames and learned that two people were still inside, police said in a release. The officers found a nearby ladder and helped the two women out of the second floor window.

"I heard some lady screaming, but I didn't actually see what was going on. But my dad was actually down on the porch and he could see that there was someone that was terrified in the top storey there," said Adam Janz, who lives next door.

"And they [firefighters] were saying 'Don't jump, don't jump!' and I guess they obviously rescued her through the ladder."

The people in the house were sent to Health Sciences Centre in stable condition.

The cause of the fire is considered suspicious and under investigation, police said.

No damage estimate on the house is available.
