Anne Harding profiles "Crabby Steve" Maksymyk at one of his famous barn dances in Teulon, Man., in this CBC-TV item that aired on March 6, 1986.

Manitoba's Interlake has lost one of its most colourful characters — a gregarious man known as Crabby.

Steve Maksymyk, known to thousands as Crabby Steve, died last week at age 91.

For nearly 40 years, from 1947 until the early 1980s, thousands of people flocked to barn dances every Saturday night at his property in Teulon, about 50 kilometres north of Winnipeg.

Every Saturday night there would be a live band and in later years, it was a DJ with recorded music who kept the tunes rolling into the early morning.

CBC News found this story in our archives from the '80s, when a reunion dance and tribute to Maksymyk was held in the old hall.

Maksymyk's funeral will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. in Teulon's Centennial Hall.
