A fast-moving fire consumed a house in Winnipeg's North Kildonan neighbourhood on Wednesday afternoon, causing an estimated $1 million in damages.

The roof of the 4,000-square-foot home on Foxdale Avenue, off Rothesay Street and north of McIvor Avenue, collapsed as fire crews fought back the flames. Thick smoke blanketed the area for much of the afternoon.

Fire officials said everyone got out of the burning house safely, including pets.

The fire chief at the scene gave an early damage estimate of $1 million. The house was 4,000 square feet in size and had an indoor pool.

The blaze appears to have started in the attic of the house, which was undergoing repairs at the time, the fire chief said.
