Winnipeg fire officials are trying to determine what caused a $600,000 fire at an East Kildonan autobody and tire shop late Wednesday afternoon.

Firefighters were called to Giardino International Auto & Tire Centre in the 800 block of Molson Street just after 5:30 p.m., but the blaze was already well involved by the time crews arrived.

Black smoke was seen billowing from the building for some time.

The fire was brought under control by about 6:30 p.m.

Platoon chief Dennis Wiwcharyk said firefighters had to be careful because there were hazardous and flammable materials in the garages, including gas, oil and other solvents.

"This was a defensive fire. We never entered the structure when we arrived on scene. We kept all crews outside," Wiwcharyk told reporters at the scene.

"After we suppressed the fire, now crews are advancing inside to put out the small fires that may be still in the building."

No injuries to emergency workers or employees were reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
