Emergency crews pulled a body from the Red River near the Louise Bridge in Winnipeg on Friday.

Witnesses who spotted the body called police about 8:15 a.m.

"You could clearly see it was female because she had pink shoes on, a skirt or shorts," said Terry Willett, who was working on the bridge and saw the body. "Honestly, I just went blank. I didn't know what to think. I've never seen a body."

Willett, a construction worker, said his crew was asked to clear the area while the body was retrieved.

"It was traumatizing to see a body for sure," he said. "I feel sorry for the young girl or however old she was."

Winnipeg police are investigating, but they could not confirm whether the body was female.
