Man dead after being pulled from water at Birds Hill Provincial Park beach

Water rescue crews pulled a young man from the waters of Birds Hill Provincial Park beach Saturday afternoon after he was reported missing hours earlier.

A 22-year-old man who immigrated to Manitoba from Africa drowned while swimming at Birds Hill beach Saturday, a member of his family told CBC News.

Water rescue crews pulled the man from the water Saturday afternoon after he had been reported missing hours earlier.

STARS air ambulance was dispatched to the beach just after 3 p.m. CT.

Beach safety officers searched for the victim with help from emergency crews from East St. Paul, who scanned the waters from three boats, RCMP said. Volunteers also patrolled the shallows.

The man was unresponsive when he was found in the water at about 4:45 p.m., RCMP said.

The former University of Manitoba student was taken to Concordia Hospital in Winnipeg where he was pronounced dead.

RCMP are expected to provide more details Sunday.
