By this time next year, the Viscount Gort Hotel in Winnipeg will offer more than just hotel rooms.

Saying his target is a "new element of people," Phil Kives has confirmed the expansion and renovation the Portage Avenue hotel, adding a 1,400-square-metre banquet and convention centre and 72 one- and two-bedroom apartments.

"There's enough hotel rooms in Winnipeg. We're not building any hotel rooms," he says.

Kives says residents in the apartments will have access to extra amenities though the hotel. "We can give everybody hotel service. We can do their rooms for them. They have the use of our swimming pool, our spa facility that we're going to be building there."

Kives has purchased the land around the hotel – including Norm 'n Nate's Delicatessen and the Jet Car Wash – for the expansion project.

The hotel will remain open during construction, which should be complete by May 2006.
