A fire caused major damage to a suite in a Winnipeg apartment block and forced out several residents.

Emergency crews were called to the building — at the corner of Cumberland Avenue and Kennedy Street in the city's Central Park area — just after 8 p.m. Thursday.

Once the building was evacuated, crews were able to quickly extinguish the fire, which was mostly contained to one suite.

However, the ones above and below it were impacted by smoke and water damage.

No one was hurt in the incident and people were allowed back into their suites after a couple of hours.

Fire officials had no details on the cause of the fire or the cost of the damage.
