Alcohol may be factor in Winnipeg train death

Winnipeg police say alcohol may have been a factor after an 18-year-old man was hit and killed by a train on Sunday.

Winnipeg police say alcohol may have been a factor after an 18-year-old man was hit and killed by a train on Sunday.

The accident happened just before 4 a.m. on the CN main line at Waverley Street and Taylor Avenue.

Police say the man was on the tracks with two friends when he was hit by an eastbound CN freight train. While it is not clear why the trio was on the tracks at the time, investigators believe alcohol may have been a factor.

Const. Jason Michalyshen said police have received prior complaints about people socializing and drinking in the area.

"I don't know if that's a common or chronic issue, but I don't think I can sit here and tell you that has never happened in that particular area."

Michalyshen said investigators are interviewing the man's two friends. He said it is believed the incident was an accident.
