Nine people, including four children, escaped a house fire in Winnipeg on Thursday.

Crews were called to the two-storey duplex on Pritchard Avenue, near Powers Street, at about 6:30 a.m.

Vanesh Jose owns the house.

He said the family that lives on the main floor was doing renovation work on the floors of the vacant second floor suite.

"They did yesterday, and then they slept and they saw some smoke and they called 9-1-1." Jose said. "Yes, they are fine, no injuries, nothing. As soon as they discovered the smoke they called 9-1-1 and they came and everything's fine."

A cat and a dog were also rescued.

Fire officials said the fire appeared to have started in the floor and the wall of the upstairs suite.

There is no estimate on the damage or the cause of the fire, which was quickly extinguished.
