2 boys accused of stolen van chase in Winnipeg

Two boys, aged 12 and 16, allegedly led Winnipeg police on a chase in a stolen minivan, smashing into a parked car along the way.

Two boys, aged 12 and 16, allegedly led Winnipeg police on a chase in a stolen minivan, smashing into a parked car along the way.

Officers in the Air1 police helicopter noticed a suspicious vehicle in the 700 block of Nassau Street South at about 1 a.m. Monday.

The van was going up and down several back lanes in the area then hit a parked car before speeding off.

Air1 directed ground crews to the van, which headed into the 300 block of Maplewood Avenue, where two people jumped out and ran off.

Air1 continued to track the suspects and canine units were able to find them at a nearby home.

Further investigation found the minivan had been recently stolen from the city's Riverview area.

The 16-year-old is facing charges of motor vehicle theft, failure to remain at the scene of an accident, and driving without a licence.

The 12-year-old is facing a charge of motor vehicle theft.

Both boys have been released from custody on a promise to appear in court.
