Manitoba toddler killed in dog attack

RCMP in Manitoba are investigating the death of a 3-year-old, apparently killed in a dog attack.

RCMP in Thompson, Man., are investigating the death of a three-year-old boy in Nelson House on Monday.

Staff Sgt. Bill Ritchat says police were notified of the tragedy by staff at the community nursing station where the child was pronounced dead upon arrival.

He says the toddler was attacked by four dogs belonging to his grandmother. "They were large dogs, cross bred dogs along the lines of German shepherd-cross dogs," he said.

Police say the child's grandmother tried to pull him away from the dogs and was attacked herself.

Ritchat says the family has requested the child's name not be released.

Chief Jerry Primrose and his council in Nelson House have issued a statement in response to the child's death. Primrose says the community is in shock over the terrible tragedy.

He says family members of the deceased child are devastated and the entire community is struggling with the loss.

An autopsy will be performed in Winnipeg.
