Morning commuters hit a road block Thursday morning at the intersection of Highbury Ave. and Huron St. in London after a water main break.

The southbound lanes of Highbury were closed to traffic just before 8 a.m. as drivers entered the usual morning rush.

"It's not a major break, we just have water coming up through the cracks in the middle of the intersection," said Roger Ham, water operations supervisor at the City of London.

"We need to open up the road to investigate what it is."

Due to the location of the water line, workers had to close the eastbound lanes and restrict traffic for north and westbound drivers as well.

Lane closures and restrictions:

  • Southbound lanes of Highbury Ave. are closed, traffic is being detoured east and west.
  • Northbound lanes of Highbury Ave. are down to a single lane.
  • Eastbound lanes of Huron St. are closed, traffic is being detoured south.
  • Westbound lanes of Huron St. are down to a single lane, with no access to southbound Highbury Ave.

There is no word on when all lanes of Highbury Ave. and Huron St. will reopen, but crews are expected to remain at the intersection for most of the day.

Drivers, cyclists and pedestrians are being asked to avoid the intersection.
