Coroner to probe death of road construction worker in St. Thomas

A coroner's inquest has been called in the death of a road construction worker in St. Thomas in July 2014.

A coroner's inquest has been called in the death of a road construction worker in St. Thomas in July 2, 2014. 

Brian Daniel, 55, died while working on a road construction project on the Highway  3 bypass at the Burwell Road overpass. 

The inquest will look at the circumstances surrounding Daniel's death. The jury may make recommendations aimed at preventing similar deaths.

The inquest is expected to last four days and to hear from approximately eight witnesses.

Dr. Rick Mann, Regional Supervising Coroner for the west region, said an inquest is mandatory any time a worker is killed at a construction project.

"The inquest will look into the events that occurred during the incident and will make recommendations based on the evidence to prevent deaths in similar circumstances in the future. 

The inquest will begin at 10 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 5, 2018, at the St. Thomas Courthouse, 4 Wellington St. 

Dr. Elizabeth Urbantke will preside as inquest coroner and Christopher Heron will be counsel to the coroner.
