Regional Chair Karen Redman re-elected, familiar names to sit on new council

Karen Redman has been re-elected as chair of Waterloo Region.

Regional Chair Karen Redman has been re-elected in Monday's municipal election, taking about 73 per cent of the votes.

Two people had challenged Redman for the regional chair position: Brendon John Da Costa won 21 per cent of the vote, followed by Narine Dat Sookram with six per cent.


In Cambridge, the two regional council winners are:

  • Former Cambridge mayor Doug Craig.
  • Cambridge Coun. Pam Wolf. 


In Kitchener, the four regional council winners were:

  • Colleen James.
  • Incumbent Michael Harris.
  • Kari Williams.
  • Robert Deutschmann.


In Waterloo, the two regional council members elected are:

  • Incumbent Jim Erb.
  • Chantal Huinink.

Candidates react

In social media posts, the elected candidates thanked the community for their support.

"I will stay abreast of issues facing our region in the years to come. I look forward to representing you," Huinink said.

Outgoing regional Coun. Tom Galloway tweeted a photo with Huinink:

James said she was "humbled" by the support.

"I'm ready to start building a Region that works for you," she said.
