Kitchener's Victoria Park is one step closer to winning a spot in the Great Places of Canada contest.

The neighbourhood is one of five to make to the final round in the contest run by the Canadian Insititute of Planners.

Spokesperson Jim Yanchula says he believes the Victoria Park area has a strong chance of winning the prize.

"It's got a rather eclectic but very harmonious architectural character with the homes that are in that neighbourhood, the presence of the park and the presence of the treeline streets around it are very similar to the characteristics in Old South Wortley in London," he said.

Other finalists include:

  • St Boniface -- Winnipeg's French quarter
  • Inglewood -- Calgary's arts and culture district
  • Old East Village heritage district in London, ON.
  • Quartier Petit Champlain -- part of old Quebec City.

Three contest winners will be announced on November 7th, one neighbourhood, one public space and one street will be chosen for the prize.
