A new local study is taking a look at the experiences of LGBTQ youth in rural Ontario, many of whom say they have felt unwelcome in their own hometowns.
Many end up moving to bigger cities like Toronto, which they say are more accepting and often less conservative than smaller rural towns.
"It's the anonymity really," Western University PhD candidate Dayna Prest told The Morning Edition's Craig Norris. "That's really what allowed queer, [and] LGBTQ culture to cultivate in cities to begin with."
Prest's current research is focused on the experiences of LGBTQ people living in Perth County. It looks at their sense of belonging, as well as what they need to do to feel more supported in the places they grew up.
