Mildred the dog survives being left in plastic bag on roadside, but she needs surgery
Staff named dog Mildred because it's an Old English name for 'gentle strength'
An elderly dog found in a plastic bag on the side of the road near Listowel has been rescued, but is facing a long recovery from a number of health conditions, the Humane Society of Kitchener Waterloo and Stratford Perth says.
The dog, which humane society staff have named Mildred, was found on July 30 and taken to the humane society "in a very poor condition," the society said.
Mildred was given a full examination including blood work and X-rays by veterinarians. The 12-year-old dog was found to have a number of health problems including chronic vaginal prolapse, multiple mammary tumours, dental disease, arthritis and severely overgrown toenails.
Over the past week, Mildred has been spayed and had the largest mammary tumours removed and sent to a lab to determine if they are cancerous.
Veterinary director Dr. Laurel Gale said Mildred has "a long road to recovery" and will need more surgeries. A campaign drive for funds has raised $6,000 so far, the society said in a release Friday.
Mildred's case was reported to Provincial Animal Welfare Services (PAWS) for further investigation, the humane society said.
Staff say they named the dog Mildred because it's an Old English name for "gentle strength."
