34 employees at the Schneiders plant in Kitchener on Courtland Avenue will be marking their last shift at the plant today. Maple Leaf Foods says the group of workers volunteered to take severance packages, as the company winds down its operations until the plant closes in December.

Peter Block, the vice president of communications at Maple Leaf Foods, says there are about 600 employees still at the plant.

91 of those are expected to leave in October and just over 100 will leave in November. The rest will finish their time with the plant in December.

"We are grateful to the employees that are there," said Block. "It's been a great team and we look forward to working with them over the course of the next few months."
