A 24-year-old Kitchener man has been charged with assault after police say a cab driver was attacked by a customer.

Officers were in the area of Fairway Road S., on Sunday around 2:20 p.m. when they found a man with serious injuries lying on the ground behind a taxi cab. The injured man was taken to hospital.

"Through investigation, police learned that the male was driving a taxi cab when he became involved in a verbal altercation, which resulted in him being assaulted by a [passenger]," police said in a release.

Officers were on patrol and arrived "within seconds" of the assault and the suspect was still in the area, Const. André Johnson said.

A weapon is not believed to have been used, he said.
