Mother charged with second-degree murder after baby boy found dead in Kitchener
Officers found body of 8-month-old boy inside Kitchener home Sunday afternoon
A woman is facing second-degree murder charges after an 8-month-old boy was found dead in Kitchener.
Police say the 26-year-old woman is the infant's mother.
Officers were called to the area of Kingsway Drive and Greenfield Avenue on Sunday just after 4 p.m. for a medical incident involving a 26-year-old woman.
"During this call for service, police received information that led them to conduct a well-being check at an apartment building on Cedarwoods Crescent in Kitchener," police said.
"Upon arrival, police located an eight-month-old boy deceased. The child's death is being investigated as a homicide."
The police service's major crime unit is investigating, but police noted officers are not looking for any additional suspects.
There will be officers in the area throughout the day Monday as the investigation is ongoing. The mother is expected to appear in court Monday afternoon.
The alleged homicide happened less than a week after police confirmed another two-year-old boy was killed in Waterloo. In that case, the boy's mother died a day later of self-inflicted injuries and police say they are not looking for any other suspects.
"Any homicide in the community is tragic, especially when dealing with young children," said Const. Andre Johnson.
"We do have dedicated investigators who are continuing to work on solving these incidents and getting a fulsome account of everything that happened ... and presenting that before the courts."
