A 32-year-old Guelph teacher has been charged with sexual offences following an investigation, police say.

Officers started an investigation into the man, who police say teaches at a Guelph high school, on Monday.

As a result of that investigation, the man was charged Tuesday with: possessing child pornography, sexual exploitation, luring a child and making explicit material available.

The man is a teacher with the Wellington Catholic District School Board.

A letter went out to families Tuesday evening from the board.

"We understand that this will add an additional layer of concern for students and families. We are working with staff to prepare them to respond to their students' needs," said Tamara Nugent, the board's director of education.

She added students with concerns could seek additional support from social workers and child and youth workers who are available in the schools.

"Given the serious nature of the charges this teacher will not be reporting for active duty at any school pending the outcome of the legal proceedings," the statement said.
