Guelph police officer charged with assault after SIU investigation
SIU says charges stem from an altercation downtown on Feb. 4
A Guelph police sergeant is facing a charge of assault following an altercation with a man in the downtown core in February.
The province's Special Investigations Unit (SIU) said the officer was at a Carden Street address on Feb. 4, 2019 at 3 a.m. as part of an investigation.
Outside the main entrance of the building, the officer became involved in an interaction with a 45-year-old man who was not part of the investigation, said the SIU.
The 45-year-old man was arrested and taken to the police station. He was later taken to hospital with serious injuries.
The SIU investigated and has now charged the officer with one count of assault causing bodily harm.
The officer is due to appear in a Guelph court on July 23 and the Guelph Police Service says the officer has been reassigned to administrative duties.
The SIU investigates reports involving police where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault. The Guelph Police Service's professional standards branch will also be conducting a review of the circumstances.
