Health Canada guilty of racial discrimination: tribunal
An East Indian scientist says the federal government needs to examine the way it treats visible minorities after the Human Rights Tribunal said Health Canada had discriminated against him.
Shiv Chopra was overlooked for promotion more than a decade ago in part because of his ethnicity, the tribunal ruled on Monday.
The tribunal also found that the department had altered job evaluations for Chopra in an attempt to strengthen its defence.
The ruling overturns a 1996 decision that Chopra lost due to a lack of evidence.
Health Canada won't comment on the ruling until after it has been studied. The department has 30 days to appeal.
