"As we go through the series, we get closer and closer to the people who knew them best," said David Ridgen, host of Someone Knows Something.

This week on the CBC Radio true crime podcast, the team unravels another piece of the mystery by introducing listeners to Sheila Darbyson, who was romantically involved with Michael Lavoie shortly after Sheryl Sheppard disappeared.

Next month, Sheppard will have been missing 19 years. She was 29 when she disappeared around Jan. 2, 1998. She'd been at a New Year's Eve party two days before with her boyfriend Michael Lavoie, who'd proposed there. Sheppard said yes.

Lavoie claims he dropped Sheppard off at a hotel in Niagara Falls, where he said she would be working as an exotic dancer. She was never seen again.

In this week's show, Someone Knows Something learns about Darbyson's relationship with Lavoie, who was Sheppard's fiancé when he met the Hamilton woman.

Michael Lavoie, right, was recently engaged to Sheryl Sheppard, left, before she disappeared on Jan. 2, 1998.

Darbyson "explains what her thoughts are on Lavoie's behaviour at the time and we also learn what she claims she witnessed," said Ridgen.

Someone Knows Something, now in its second season, is produced new every week. It invites people who knew Sheppard and the case to submit information.
