Severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain could develop this afternoon, Environment Canada says.

The federal weather agency says threat of severe thunderstorms this afternoon and early evening is associated with a cold front moving across Southern Ontario.

"Thunderstorms are also possible well in advance of the front," Environment Canada says.

The agency says strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles; while heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads.

Residents are being reminded that lightning kills and injuries Canadians every year, and they should stay indoors during a thunderstorm.
