SIU investigating after woman found unresponsive in Niagara police cell dies

Ontario's police watchdog is investigating after a 24-year-old woman found unresponsive in a cell at a Niagara police station died Thursday.

Ontario's police watchdog is investigating after a 24-year-old woman found unresponsive in a cell at a Niagara police station died Thursday.

The woman was arrested near Kitchener Street and Slater Avenue in Niagara Falls for breaching bail conditions just after 5 p.m. on Wednesday, according to the Special Investigations Unit (SIU).

She appeared at a tele-bail hearing the following day around 2 p.m. and was then returned to her cell, says the SIU.

At 4:50 p.m. she was found unresponsive. The SIU says emergency medical services were called in and the woman was pronounced dead.

Two investigators and one forensic investigators have been assigned to the case. A post-mortem is scheduled for today in Toronto.

The SIU is asking anyone with information about the investigation to contact them or upload video through their website.
