Billowing black smoke filled the sky above wine country in Niagara-on-the-Lake Tuesday after a fire erupted at the Colaneri Estate Winery on Concession 6 Road.

The fire first caught on a stack of skids and then spread to a storage shed behind the main winery building, said NOTL deputy fire chief Nick Ruller.

Firefighters were called to the scene around 2:00 p.m.

Fire crews quickly contained the blaze within 30 minutes of arriving on scene, ensuring the 31,000 square foot Romanesque style main building was not affected.

No injuries were reported after the fire was contained.

The cause of the fire is uncertain at this point, but an investigation is set to begin shortly by NOTL Fire and Emergency Services.
