Hamilton police have charged a 32-year-old Brampton woman with careless driving after they say she crashed her vehicle, which left her five-year-old daughter with serious injuries.

The single-vehicle collision happened at Centennial Parkway and South Service Road on Sept. 8, 2020.

Police say evidence at the scene showed the woman was driving westbound when she lost control. Her vehicle left the road and hit a light standard.

Her 5-year-old daughter, also in the car, was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

Detectives now say the daughter wasn't properly secured inside the vehicle and that her mother is responsible for the crash. They say speed wasn't a factor in the crash.

In addition to careless driving, police say the woman also faces a charge for failing to properly secure her daughter, who is still recovering.

The woman is set to appear in court on Feb. 8.
