Hamilton residential care home fined for fire code violations

A residential care home has been fined under the Ontario Fire Code after a supervisor failed to follow the building's emergency procedures during an incident in September.

The operator of the Faith Hope Manor on John Street North and one of its employees pled guilty in provincial offences court on May 2, resulting in $2,500 in fines.

The operator was fined $2,000 and the employee $500.

During a "fire incident" on Sept. 11, the on-duty supervisor didn't follow the approved emergency procedures, which was to evacuate residents, said a media release from Hamilton's fire department. Instead, he waited until he knew it was an emergency.

"Building owners must take responsibility to ensure their staff is fully trained in emergency procedures in order to provide the required level of safety for their residents," said Frank Biancucci, chief fire prevention officer with the Hamilton fire department.
