3 new Ontario songs you need to hear this week, Sept. 26 edition

This week we're all about punk rock, manic jazz and well crafted pop rock — it's a good time for Ontario music, people.

Check out these new tracks from The Dirty Nil, Daniel Fortin and Born Ruffians as part of reporter Adam Carter's weekly spot from In the Key of C on CBC Radio 1.

The Dirty Nil: No Weaknesses

The Dirty Nil are one of the best punk rock bands in the country right now, and if you haven't been listening to them, you should be.

No Weaknesses is a track off the band's upcoming 7 inch, and it is pure energy and noise in that grand MC5 tradition.

The Dundas three-piece always manages to bridge the gap between pop melodies and punk rock.

This song is dirty as all hell, but it's also an ear worm that won't go away.

Born Ruffians: Don't Live Up

Don't Live Up is a great new song from Midland's Born Ruffians from the band's upcoming album, Ruff.

The guitar line on this track really carries the tune, especially when coupled with solid vocals and catchy staccato horns.

Add in a brilliantly done, one-shot music video, and this is a real winner.

Daniel Fortin: Smithereen

Smithereen from Peterborough's Daniel Fortin highlights the brilliance and frailty of jazz — this tune always sounds like it's just on the verge of falling apart, but never does.

This is from his latest album, called Brinks, and it's well worth a listen for anyone who likes spend some time searching for a song's time signature.
