One of hockey's all-time greats is coming to Hamilton this fall to celebrate one of the biggest moments in sports for the both city and the country.

Wayne Gretzky will share his memories of winning the 1987 Canada Cup at a gala dinner hosted by Carmen's Group on Oct. 16 called "An Evening with The Great One."

The evening coincides with the 30th anniversary of the Canada Cup victory, which saw Gretzky and Mario Lemieux team up to for the historic late goal that propelled Canada to a thrilling 6-5 win in the final game over the USSR.

A massive celebration broke out at what was then known as Copps Coliseum, as the win marked the third of three tense games between Canada and the Soviets, with two games going to overtime. All were decided by identical 6-5 scores.

"It's hard to believe that 30 years have gone by, but what a great idea to celebrate that win right where it happened in the Hammer," said Gretzky.

Gretzky was the tournament MVP and points leader.

Crowned "The Great One," the Brantford native needs no real introduction. He's a four-time Stanley Cup winner, and holds a startling 61 NHL records.

Proceeds from the event go to support minor hockey in Hamilton, through the Canadian Tire "Jumpstart" program. Further proceeds are going to support children's nutrition programs through Food4Kids, which provides 1,525 children with food in the Weekends without Hunger program, and delivers food to 600 children through the summer.

Organizers say the evening will also pay tribute to the 45th anniversary of the iconic 1972 Canada Russia Series, with players from that team in attendance.

Tickets cost $200 and can be purchased online or from the Carmen's Box Office at 905-387-0007. The tickets include a four course meal, an auction, and a moderated discussion with Gretzky.

VIP tickets for a meet and greet and photo cost $999 for a single picture and $1,499 for pictures with two guests.

Other guests that Carmen's has brought to Hamilton for similar events include Al Pacino, Sylvester Stallone, Sophia Loren, Olivia Newton-John, and Michael Douglas.
