Two high school girls from Caledonia, police say, posted to social media a picture of a girl holding a gun with a caption reading "Don't come to school tomorrow."

Police say the girls, students at Caledonia's McKinnon Park Secondary School, meant the post as a joke. After seeing the post online parents and staff at the school, recognizing the girl, called police.

Haldimand police say they got calls from concerned staff and parents on Mar. 20. OPP investigated and found the gun to be an "air soft" pistol that fires plastic bullets.

The girls told police they "realized it had gone too far," according to a press release.

Police say they spoke to the two girls and their parents after determining there was no threat to the public. Police say school staff is now dealing with the matter.
