Diver dies after being trapped under the ice in Welland canal, police say
A scuba diver died on Saturday after being trapped under the ice in the Welland Recreational Canal, Niagara police say.
Officers were called to the Welland canal around 1:04 p.m. on Jan. 9 for a marine call, says a Niagara Regional Police Service media release.
When they got there, they learned that two men in their 20s were scuba diving, police say. They'd become separated, and one surfaced to try to locate his diving partner.
The other man had "become trapped under the ice," police say.
Someone walking along the canal called 911, police say, and firefighters and paramedics rushed to the scene.
"Life-saving measures were immediately commenced," police said. "However, he was pronounced deceased."
The investigation continues.
