Police have arrested a Hamilton man for attempted murder following a fight between friends early Wednesday morning that ended with a stabbing.

Officers were called to an apartment at 123 Bold Street after reports of a disturbance and found "signs of a commotion and a large amount of blood," but no people, according to a media release.

About 10 minutes later, a man with "severe abdominal lacerations" arrived at a St. Joseph's Healthcare emergency room and told staff he had been stabbed by a friend during a fight at his apartment on Bold Street, say investigators.

Police were at the hospital for an unrelated matter and say they gathered details about the assault from the victim, who told them the other man involved in the fight was also sitting at the hospital waiting for care.

A 31-year-old man was arrested at the hospital based on evidence supplied by the patient, say police.

He's charged with attempted murder, uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm and two counts of failing to comply with probation.

The victim is still in hospital, but is expected to survive. Police say the suspect suffered minor injuries and remains in custody.
