A man is recovering in hospital after being assaulted in downtown Hamilton late Tuesday, police say.

It happened around 11:45 p.m., in the area of Bay Street South and Hunter Street West.

Police say officers got to the area to find a man in his 30s with non-life threatening injuries. He was taken to hospital for treatment.

Const. Jerome Stewart told CBC News that detectives will be speaking with the victim this morning to get information about what happened.

It's too early to say how many suspects there are, or what sort of weapon was used, he said.

"The object has not been confirmed."
