Niagara police have arrested a woman they say set fire to seven cars in downtown St. Catharines.

Police arrested a 55-year-old Niagara Falls woman near a car fire at 4 a.m. Wednesday morning. The officers were patrolling around Lake and Beech streets, police say, because several cars had been set on fire in that area since March.

The officers spotted something burning under a parked car and arrested a woman walking away from it, says a media release from the Niagara Regional Police Service.

She is charged in connection with seven fires that date back to late May, and faces five counts of attempting to commit arson and two counts of arson that caused damage to property. She has a bail hearing in St. Catharines court Thursday.

Police are investigating other car fires that date back to March, said Const. Phil Gavin.
