1 man dead in early morning Hess Street fire

After an early morning fire at a Hess Street apartment building one man has died.

The damage is estimated at $20,000

After an early morning fire at a Hess Street apartment building one man has died.

The Hamilton Fire Department responded to a call at 1:24 a.m. Friday morning at the 17-storey apartment at 95 Hess Street South. 

Firefighters worked to put out a fire on the 16th floor.

In a press release, Hamilton Fire public information officer Claudio Mostacci said "firefighters located and removed the lone occupant from the apartment." Mostacci said, later in hospital, the man was pronounced dead.

The damage is estimated at $20,000.

The Ontario Fire Marshal's Office has been notified and will assist in determining the cause.
