Woman freezes to death after her car breaks down
An elderly woman froze to death after her car broke down on a rural road in northern Alberta, RCMP say.
Valleyview RCMP were called about an abandoned vehicle about 130 km east of Grand Prairie. A short time later, they found a 65-year-old woman in a ditch, about 500 metres from her car.
The woman was driving alone when she slid into the ditch during a blizzard and apparently tried to walk for help, police said.
Police say anyone driving in poor weather conditions should carry proper safety equipment, including food, a candle and a sleeping bag.
"If someone does abandon their vehicle, the RCMP in Valleyview are requesting that the motorist leave a note on their dash or window indicating their whereabouts or if a tow truck or if the RCMP have been notified," police said in a release.
