The Energy Resources Conservation Board is investigating a leak at a bitumen well near Bourque Lake, 35 kilometres northwest of Cold Lake, Alta.

The leak began Tuesday night at an Imperial Oil wellsite, said the ERCB.

The leak released about 400 cubic metres, or 2,500 barrels, of crude bitumen emulsion before the flow was stopped early Thursday.

While most of the oil remained on site, a portion of the emulsion sprayed off the lease.

There are no residents in the area and public safety was not threatened, said the ERCB.

Crews are working to clean up the area.
