A 17-year-old boy is in hospital with severe injuries after an accident at an Lloydminster auto shop, RCMP say.

The boy was working on a trailer tire Sunday when it blew, hitting him in the head with the tire assembly.

"This caused a head injury and the worker has been airlifted to Saskatoon," said Lisa Glover, spokeswoman for Alberta Occupational Health and Safety.

The boy is being treated for severe head and face injuries.

Occupational Health and Safety is now investigating.
