St. Joseph's Basilica marks Pope's service with mass
About a thousand people attended a thanksgiving mass for Pope Benedict XVI at St. Joseph's Basilica in Edmonton on Thursday.
Benedict’s resignation came in effect at 12 p.m. MT, making him the first pope to retire in nearly 600 years.
Louisa Bilodeau said it was important for her to attend Thursday’s mass.
"The Pope is a very special person and we want to pray for him and for his successor." she said. "He was a super teacher, very clear-minded and a great theologian."
Sister Doreen Victor said that she appreciates the pope as a role model for seniors like herself.
"I think he gave a wonderful example of when we come to recognize that we do have limitations to accept them graciously and to leave the place for others to take over," she said.
Edmonton Archbishop Richard Smith said this was a historic day for the Roman Catholic church.
Smith said that the mass was a way to thank the Pope for his service.
