Speeding stop leads to drug bust

A man faces trafficking charges after the vehicle he was riding in was stopped for speeding in Sylvan Lake Saturday.

A Sylvan Lake man is facing drug charges after a traffic stop turned up a number of percocet pills.

"This started out as a simple traffic stop for speed but grew to so much more," RCMP Corp. James Allemekinders said in a release.

RCMP pulled a vehicle over for speeding in the town Saturday night.

They say the driver had been drinking, so the vehicle was towed and the man’s license suspended. A passenger in the car is the person now facing drug charges.

Officers found the pills inside the vehicle as well as a large amount of money.

"We believe that we have seized not only illegal drugs but the profits that came from the trafficking of drugs," Allemekinders said.

They’ve charged the car’s passenger, a 33-year-old man, with  possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking as well as possession of the proceeds of crime.
