Snelgrove resigns from Tory caucus

Lloyd Snelgrove has left the Alberta Progressive Conservative caucus.

MLA Lloyd Snelgrove has left the Alberta Progressive Conservative caucus.

Snelgrove was the finance minister in former premier Ed Stelmach's government, but was not invited to the cabinet table by current premier Alison Redford.

The news was tweeted Friday by Redford's chief of staff, Stephen Carter.

Snelgrove, who represents Vermilion-Lloydminster, will sit as an independent.

Wildrose Leader Danielle Smith said she wasn't surprised by Snelgrove's decision.

"I applaud him for standing on principle," she said. "It's quite clear that he can no longer support the direction of the Redford PCs and I share with him the concerns that he has about the direction of the government."

Snelgrove has already said he will not run in this spring's election
