Councillors on the community services committee have approved a proposal to reopen the fire station in Rossdale.

Fire officials want to base a river-rescue crew at the station, which has been vacant since the 1990s.

The boat is stored at the Rossdale station, but crews have to travel from Mill Creek, which adds to the response time.

Fire Chief Ken Block believes the station could also be used for back-up crews to respond to downtown emergencies.

Some residents oppose the plan because of concerns about noise and traffic.

The recommendation will now go to a full vote at Edmonton city council.
